UNICEF launches flagship report focusing on urban children

UNICEF’s flagship publication, 'The State of the World’s Children 2012' (SOWC), says that almost half the world’s children now live in urban areas, and it’s calling for greater emphasis on identifying and meeting their needs.

Will we ever learn...?

- Humans do incredibly stupid things in their plight for survival. Despite the fact that everything they really need has been provided for by Mother Nature, they simply continue to destroy her. How many generations will it take before we learn our lesson, or will we never learn...?

‎- I just love this new video clip below, made in the same community with and by youth of our AfroBreak dance group and really think it deserves more attention. This is the power of community....

Surviving...

Surviving..., originally uploaded by carf.
- Surviving the impossible of human development: 500 years of abuse, but how much longer will the Guarani people endure the changes and demands of the dominant world?

A major problem today for the indigenous people's healthy survival and integrity is how to address the imbalance created by the non-indian society, caused when one controls the indian's way of life by strictly demarcating very limited and inferior areas for them to live and practice their traditional way of life (whilst the non-indians continues to destroy more and more of their natural territory to sustain their own insatiable needs), creating dependency on irresponsible government assistance programs and forcing upon them the non-indian's economic system to be able to survive in this new unbalanced world (with not even the basic know-how or education to do so), also deciding how they are to live (exist) and showing very little respect for their peculiarities.

In such a scenario, the indigenous people's lives become merely a tough plight for survival, barely hanging on to their very personal spiritual customs, but far from living the "ideal" life they have lived for centuries, with traditions passed on from generation to generation.

Today the indigenous people of Brazil are imprisoned in the non-indian's world without the means to defend themselves. No matter what national or international legislation exists to protect their rights, the genocide continues......

Sobrevivendo...

Aimed at impoverished younger children participating in our Street Migration Prevention Programme, normally aged between 11 and 14 years of age. This scholarship guarantees their active participation at the Hummingbird Activity Center alongside their essential attendance in public schools. The scholarship helps combat child labor in high-risk families by preventing these children becoming new victims. The scholarship is awarded to those in particularly difficult life situations where survival often becomes a more important factor than the child’s educational needs and mental and physical health. As a regular sponsor you will have the opportunity to stay in contact with your scholarship holder and to follow the changes your sponsorship will be making in this child's life.

Intermediate Scholarships - USD$60.00 - $70.00 per month

This youth scholarship is aimed at developing vocational interests in young people as they grow with our programme, guaranteeing their commitment and eventually leading them on towards an advanced scholarship. A firmer step towards their personal life project. As a regular sponsor you will have the opportunity to stay in contact with your scholarship holder and to follow the changes your sponsorship will be making in this young person's life.

Advanced Scholarship - USD$80.00 - $100.00 per month

Aimed to inspire older youth reach their potential in whatever area they are developing natural or acquired abilities in programmes at the Hummingbird Activity Centre. The scholarship can be used to cover costs for supplementary, external educational courses or for extra training sessions and materials. Such funds would otherwise be an impossible priority for them to obtain within an impoverished family situation. As a regular sponsor you will have the opportunity to stay in contact with your scholarship holder and to follow the changes your sponsorship will be making in this young person's life.
